We have developed a route for the synthesis of bulky tris(imidazol-2-ylidene)borate ligands that incorporate imidazole N-substituents such as tert-butyl and mesityl. These ligands are readily transferred to manganese, iron and cobalt, providing access to coordinatively unsaturated metal halide complexes supported by a trigonal platform of N-heterocyclic carbenes. Further functionalization of the metal center is achieved by reactions of the metal halide bond. The reactivity of these complexes towards oxidants, including dioxygen, is presented.
