| Both 2- and 3-nitroindoles are important building blocks in the synthesis of indole-containing heterocycles and natural products. Although 3-nitroindoles can be easily prepared by nitration of N-protected indoles, the synthesis of 2-nitroindoles is difficult. A convenient synthesis of 2-nitroindoles using AgNO2 as the nitrating agent will be presented. Reduction of nitroindoles to aminoindoles or their derivatives is uncommon. We will present an efficient methodology for the reduction of nitroindoles.
