Fast track innovation, development and commercialization of Shell Chemical's economically viable process route to 1,3-propanediol (PDO) is described, covering elements of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis in the hydroformylation of ethylene oxide, and hydrogenation of a beta-hydroxy intermediate to the desired diol product. An overview of the various catalyst systems and process schemes examined and developed is presented, along with strategies and approaches used for rapid project execution and commercialization.
