Panacene is a secondary metabolite of the sea hare Aplysia brasiliana which is indigenous to the coast of Florida. Interest in this compound stems from its novel structure and ecological role as potent feeding deterrent to sharks and other predatory fish. So far, panacene has been prepared only in racemic form by two related, lenghty routes. The first enantioselective total synthesis of panacene will be described.
