| The helix is a fundamental structure and plays important roles in realizing biological activities. We hope to devise new types of unnatural helical molecules, and to follow nature's example in linking function to structure. A salophen ligand was successfully synthesized using a new ozonolysis strategy in 12 steps, starting with dihydrobenzofuran. This salophen ligand has a random structure in the absence of a metal. Interestingly, it adoptes a helix structure when it is coordinated with a nickel (II). The helical structure of metal salophen complex in solid state was confirmed by X-ray crystallography and in solution was confirmed by 2D NMR studies. The metal coordination was thought to be the essential part for the formation of the helix. It is also found that the crystal formed in the solution is chiral. |
