A new class of low molecular-mass organogelators (LMOGs) that form thermally reversible organogels with partially or completely fluorinated liquids is reported. The LMOGs are perfluoroalkyl amides, F(CF2)nCONH(CH2)mH. The incompatibility of the fluorocarbon and hydrocarbon segments causes the molecules to aggregate, probably into lamellae. Gelation properties of these LMOGs, with a long or short alkyl chain and where the length of the perfluoroalkyl chain is varied, have been examined in different fluorinated liquids. Analyses of these results and structure/solvent correlations will be provided.
