The Zoanthamine alkaloids are a family of functionally dense, usually heptacyclic natural products presenting a formidable challenge to total synthesis. Isolated from the zoanthids of the genus Zoanthus they have several pharmacological properties including the potential use as a drug for osteoporosis. Synthetic studies towards these natural products will be presented.
