Isoschizozygane alkaloids are structurally unique natural products isolated from the monotypic shrub Schizozygia Coffaeoides in tropical East Africa. Isoschizogaline (1) has recently been reported to possess moderate antibacterial properties. We describe our studies toward the asymmetric synthesis of isoschizozygan alkaloids featuring a Claisen rearrangement and a formal hetero Diels-Alder reaction to stereoselectively assemble the densenly functionalized skeletons of the targets.
