| We report here concerning the preparation and properties of a series of compounds in which a pair of beta-cyclodextrin units are joined through each of their 6-position carbons by bridges containing cationic (quaternary ammonium) sites. In this manner tubes have been constructed bearing neutral ends (cyclodextrin units) with the polycationic flexible connectors forming the body of the tube. Chloride ions provide the anionic component of the salts isolated and studied. As such, these salts are molecular scale versions of the classical "Chinese finger puzzle." In addition to preparation and structural verification, the ability of these materials to bind anionic species of various structures has been investigated. |
