Poly(imidazoliummethyl styrene)-surface grafted-polystyrene resin was prepared by suspension polymerization as N-heterocyclic carbene precursor for polymer-supported catalyst in Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. To prepare the polymeric support which contains imidazolium group on the surface of the resin, an ionic liquid monomer, 1-methyl-3-(4-vinylbenzyl) imidazolium hexafluorophosphaste [MVBIM][PF6-], was synthesized and then copolymerized with styrene and DVB in an aqueous phase. This new imidazolium group-containing resin was used for preparing NHCs-palladium complex, which efficiently catalyzed the Suzuki cross-coupling of aryl halides and phenylboronic acid.
