Electrophilic amination provides a conceptually powerful means for the incorporation of nitrogen into molecular frameworks. Nitrogen-containing functional groups are prominent amongst bioactive compounds, making methods for their selective introduction of fundamental importance in organic synthesis. Recently we have discovered novel electrophilic aminating agents that offer extremely effective heteroatom transfer with a range of nucleophiles. We will summarize our findings and subsequent applications to heterocyclic synthesis.
