Synthesis of 1,2-di(5-benzo[b]fluorenyl)benzenes via benzannulated enediynes

Thermolysis of 1 in the presence of potassium t-butoxide under refluxing toluene furnished 1,2-di(5-benzo[b]fluorenyl)benzene 2 in a single operation. Interestingly, the rac-isomers 2 were produced exclusively. Other related compounds were likewise synthesized as potential bidentate ligands to form complexes with group 4 metals.
