| In the past, tosylhydrazones frequently have been used in the presence of a strong base and high temperatures to generate carbenes. In a few specialized circumstances photochemical conditions have been used but the generality has not been studied nor have conditions been optimized. The purpose of this project was to study the photolytic conditions necessary to generate carbenes from tosylhydrazones. This was accomplished by reacting tosylhydrazone under various reaction conditions—changing the base, the reaction vessel, the solvent, wavelength, and irradiation time. |
