As part of our studies on antiaromatic dications, we synthesized a variety of substituted diphenylmethylidene derivatives of tetrahydroanthracene (1) and their 10,10-disubstituted-9,9-dihydroanthracenes (2) and 10,10-disubstituted anthrones (3). Details of their synthesis will be reported with an emphasis on optimization of conditions to allow multigram quantities of product.
