The planar bis-bidentate ligand ppz(4’,7’-phenanthrolino-5,6:5’6’-pyrazine or 1,4,5,12-Tetraza-triphenylene) can bind metals at one or both of its diimine sites. "Ppz" is also a DNA intercalator , and this is under intensive study in our laboratory. We will describe a new route to prepare ppz in high yield via 5,6-diamino-4,7-phenanthroline. The methodology also allows the preparation of substituted ppz compounds. Several such compounds will be described. In addition, other new ppz derivatives are also described, including 1,4,5,12 - tetraaza-triphenylene-2,3-dicarbonitrile and several ppz derivatives prepared from it. ![]() |
