Monodisperse polystyrene nanospheres synthesized via emulsifier free emulsion polymerization were functionalized at the surface with amino and hydroxy groups in the presence of triflic acid, using trimethylsilyl azide and bis (trimethylsilyl) peroxide, respectively. The size, integrity, nature and functionality of the nanospheres were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy, diffuse reflectance IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. These surface amino groups were then subjected to diazo-coupling reactions resulting in chromophore containing polymer nanospheres. The amino and hydroxy groups were also transformed into other useful functionalities.
