| The construction of adjacent quaternary centers is a challenge in synthetic chemistry, and our group is studying the photochemical decarbonylation of crystalline ketones as a general method for their construction. In order for the reaction to proceed in crystals, radical stabilizing groups must be present. One important part of our work is currently concentrated on developing new radical stabilizing substituents in decarbonylation precursors. To date, we have reported the decarbonylation of ketones with phenyl, á-carbonyl, and alkoxy substituents radical stabilizing groups in the solid state. Alkenyl groups are of great interest to us because of there widespread prevalence in many structural motifs, including many natural products. The results of these solid state reactions will be presented. |
