The formation of alkenes, while controlling the resulting double bond geometry is of central importance in organic chemistry. This work will describe the addition of functionalised organolithiums to epoxides in the presence of an additive resulting in trans-alkenes. In the absence of the additive simple nucleophilic ring opening occurs.
