Recently, we have shown that acenaphthoporphyrins display unusual spectroscopic properties and give large bathochromic shifts in their UV-Visible absorbtion spectra. In this study, the syntheses of related highly conjugated species, such as tetraphenyltetrapyracyloporphyrin 1, have been targeted. Dihydropyracylene 2 was nitrated with nitryl chloride to give 3, and subsequent condensation with ethyl isocyanoacetate afforded the novel pyrrole ester 4.
