Many enzymes use coenzymes that reversibly bind to their active sites. They also commonly use acid and base groups to achieve proton transfers, and they perform their catalyses inside a non-aqueous core of the enzyme even though the exterior solvent is water. We will describe artificial enzymes that imitate all of these features.
