Using the well known Bingel-Hirsch reaction, a series of water-soluble fullerene derivatives have been synthesized. Mono, bis, and tris substituted C60 and C70 compounds with either amino or carboxylic acid side chains were made. Biological properties, such as inhibition of nitric oxide synthase, and water solubility of the derivatives were compared. The synthesis, characterization, and properties will be discussed.
