The synthesis of poly(3-substituted thiophene)s by oxidative coupling polymerization was investigated. The polymerizations were conducted with iron(III) chloride The variables examined include solvent, concentration, and stoichiometric ratio of oxidant to monomer. The effect of the conditions on the molecular weight and head-to-tail content of poly(3-alkylthiophene)s and the relationship to the thermochromic transition was monitored.
