Sol – gel films on glass containing fluorescent 2,7-diazapyrenium dications were prepared. The response of the films to dopamine was studied by emission spectroscopy. The fluorescence intensity of the immobilized electron deficient dications decreases significantly after addition of increasing amounts of the electron rich analyte. The original emission intensity of the fluorescent films is restored after washing them with water and ethanol. These sensitive coatings are promising materials for the fabrication of cathecholamine neurotransmitters sensors.
