The spectrum characteristic and photodegradation kinetics of four near-infrared absorbing cyanine dyes with three heterocyclic stem nuclei structure have been studied by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that the fading process followed quasi-first-order kinetics in acetonitrile. Using UV spectra data, we found that the photostability of dyes with three kinds of typical structure of heterocyclic stem nuclei was in such order: benindolenine>benquinoline>benzothiazole. In other experiments, the quantum yield of the four dyes was investigated by dynamical method and the process of its calculation was introduced in detail. And the results also revealed that the rate of photofading reactions of the four dyes followed quasi-first-order kinetics in acetonitrile.
