The use of b-keto esters in the preparation of 4-quinolones will be detailed. As this is an area which has been examined by other groups previously, our attempts to improve upon the existing syntheses will be presented. We have changed, for example, the ester group and some procedures in the workups at various stages. Structures of the intermediates will be supported with spectral data including NMR spectra in order to point out potential problems. Emphasis will be placed on the precursors to the quinolones, since a fundamental understanding of the formation of precursor compounds may lead to better methods of production of the heterocyclic final products.
