| Multi-branched extended ð-conjugated systems have been the subject of recent research due to a growing interest in photonics. In this paper, we report the synthesis of triple-branched chromophores with pyridine termini choosing as the core either a benzene ring or a nitrogen atom. The pyridine unit is used in systems here to provide some polarity and also as a functional group for eventual surpramolecular applications. Both small triple-branched molecules and extended molecules were synthesized. X-ray structures show that some of the small triple-branched molecules are not coplanar. Absorption and emission properties were studied. Some of the nitrogen-cored molecules are very fluorescent and this has been studied in some detail. |
