Multiple-state photoswitches

Benzo[e]-fused dimethyldihydropyrene (BDHP, 1a) is one of the best photoswitchable system reported so far. It photoisomerizes to the corresponding cyclophanediene (CPD) 1b with high quantum yield. Several systems with multiple BDHP switches connected through non-annelated spacers has been synthesized. Systems 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are examples of such systems. The synthesis and interesting properties of some of those systems will be presented.
